NDP, housing advocates win rent control for tenants

HALIFAX - NDP Leader Gary Burrill made the following statement about today’s housing announcement:

"Today is a big victory for everyone who has called for rent control in Nova Scotia. It is a huge accomplishment, particularly, for all those tenants, tenants' organizations and housing advocates who have spoken up out of their experience of sudden, astronomical rent increases.
The Liberal government has argued against our calls for rent control and has contradicted tenants and denied the reality of their experience. Tenants have won this debate today.
The NDP first introduced a bill to bring in rent control in September 2017. For now, these are temporary measures, and the NDP will continue to pressure the Liberals to actually bring in full, permanent rent control and a ban on all evictions during the state of emergency.”
