McNeil Liberals need to update environment goals legislation
Halifax-- NDP Leader Gary Burrill made the following statement in response to the Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment meeting today in Halifax:
“The McNeil Liberals cannot call themselves climate leaders when we do not have a single climate action target legislated past next year. The Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act was an all-party commitment to set hard targets to ensure our province does its part in protecting the environment and fighting climate change.
The McNeil Liberals were required to review and update the goals of the Act in 2017. It is now halfway through 2019 and this still has not been done. The current law only has goals set until 2020, less than a year away.
The environment demands better leadership than this. The McNeil government needs to update this Act to reflect the urgent need for action.”
