Live performance industry needs support

HALIFAX -- NDP Communities, Culture, and Heritage spokesperson Susan Leblanc made the following statement about the Day of Visibility for the Live Event Community event:

“Live, in-person events and performances were some of the first activities that had to be shut down at the beginning of the pandemic. In many cases, these events will be the last that are able to come back as restrictions are lifted. COVID-19 has had an unprecedented impact both on the people in our communities who make a living through live performances and on all of us who attend live events.
The arts are a vital sector when it comes to culture and tourism and are an important part of our economy. Live performances, including theatre productions, live music, dance, and other events, are also an integral part of our province’s social fabric. The Liberal government must step up and be involved in supporting performers and the companies and venues that put on live events as we continue to deal with the impact of COVID-19.”

Tonight, performance venues, landmarks, and homes across Canada will be lit up in red, referencing red stage curtains that have been closed for months, to bring attention to this issue. Members of the NSNDP caucus will join in this effort at their homes or constituency offices, in solidarity with the live-event community.
