Leblanc: Court decision highlights need to keep the promise of the Boat Harbour Act

HALIFAX- Susan Leblanc, NDP Indigenous Affairs spokesperson, made the following statement about today’s decision from the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal in favour of Pictou Landing First Nation:

“Today’s decision from the court is yet another example of the Liberal government’s failure to meet its duty to consult with Mi’kmaq communities. The Liberals have repeatedly chosen to take communities to court, rather than seek a respectful nation to nation relationship with Indigenous peoples.
The Liberal government has had years to ensure that the commitment made to Pictou Landing First Nation to close the treatment facility in Boat Harbour would be upheld. Instead, the Liberals’ inaction has created division and uncertainty for communities in Pictou County. ”
