Improved access to services, health care for trans community needed

HALIFAX -- NDP 2SLGBTQ+ Affairs spokesperson Susan Leblanc made the following statement on the Transgender Day of Remembrance:

“As we mark this year’s Transgender Day of Remembrance, the need for improved services and health care for trans and non-binary members of our communities is even more clear. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are facing increased barriers in employment, housing, and health care. On this day it is important we acknowledge this reality for the transgender community as well.
Members of the trans and non-binary community face discrimination and barriers to service always, and the pandemic has made that worse. Unemployment is up, finding affordable housing is increasingly difficult, and wait times for gender-affirming surgeries have increased.
Political representatives and other community leaders must continue to commit ourselves to working towards a province free of transphobia, and where trans people are able to thrive.”
