Houston’s health plan update due

HALIFAX -- The Houston government promised an update to its April health plan to add benchmarks and timelines by early summer. The NSNDP is calling on Minister Thompson and the Premier to release the update and tell Nova Scotians how and when they will see real improvements to health care in our province.

“The plan that was released in April was really more of a wish list with few specifics about how or when these plans would be accomplished,” said NDP Health spokesperson Susan Leblanc. “People want to understand what the plan is and when they can expect to see changes for the better in the health care that they need.”

There are almost 95,000 people on the family doctor waitlist this month with 5760 new people adding their names in May. Waitlists for surgery and mental health appointments remain long.

“There is a serious mental health crisis in our province and we need a serious strategy to guide how we make sure people get the care they need,” said NDP Mental Health and Addictions spokesperson, Lisa Lachance. “The plan that the Houston government gave us in April says very little about mental health or new options to make sure more people get the care they need in a timely manner.”
