Homes Within Reach

Nova Scotians are facing some of the fastest-rising rents in the country and these skyrocketing housing costs have made it harder for people to buy their first home.

Claudia Chender and Nova Scotia New Democrats are ready to ensure affordable homes are within reach of all Nova Scotians.

Claudia Chender and New Democrats will

Prioritize prefabricated homes

Nova Scotia needs to build tens of thousands of new homes – and fast. Prefabricated and modular homes can be quickly assembled and cost less than traditional homes.

  • Leverage federal funding to quickly build more prefabricated and modular homes.
  • Reduce costs by building on unused or underused public land.
  • Support local builders and manufacturers here in Nova Scotia.

Expand the Down Payment Assistance Program

Nova Scotia’s current Down Payment Assistance Program isn’t working for those who need it the most.

  • Help lower overall mortgages and monthly costs for first-time homeowners by providing larger down payments and longer repayment periods.
  • Expand the loan from five to 10 per cent of the purchase price, up to $50,000.
  • Extend the repayment period from 10 to 25 years.

Protect tenants and help offset the rising cost of renting

With the cost of rent rapidly rising in Nova Scotia, we’ll make sure renters don’t get left behind.

  • Introduce real, permanent rent control to ensure tenants are protected from increases.
  • Create a refundable tax credit for renters to offset the rising cost of rent.
