Chender: reopening plans must support workers with children

HALIFAX -- NDP Business spokesperson Claudia Chender made the following statement today after the teleconference meeting of the Human Resources Committee:

“Today, I was glad to see all-party support for the NDP’s motion calling on the Minister of Labour to require all workplaces to include accommodations for employees with dependents in their plans for re-opening.

We’ve heard from parents and caregivers who don’t know how they can return to work when they don’t have any options for child care. Many people are concerned that they’ll lose their job because they will need to stay home with their children.

No one should have to choose between keeping their job and staying home to take care of children who have nowhere else to go. Without a safe and public plan for child care for children of all ages, many women will be forced out of the workforce. ”
