Chender: Liberals must stop underfunding Elections NS, set fixed election dates

Halifax -- NDP House Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement in response to Elections Nova Scotia’s 2019 Election Readiness Update report:

“There is no way to avoid the cost of elections. Rejecting budget requests from the body that governs our system puts our democratic institutions at risk and could undermine our democracy.

If the Liberal government is concerned about the cost of election readiness, they could set fixed election dates, providing Elections Nova Scotia with clarity about the timing of the next election. Nova Scotia is the only province in Canada without fixed dates.”

The NDP believes in broad-based electoral reform that includes fixed election dates, lowering the voting age to 16, and switching to a voting system based on proportional representation.
