Burrill: Residents of long-term care deserve more and better care

HALIFAX -- NDP Leader Gary Burrill made the following statement in response to new research from the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union on long-term care:

“This research from the Nurses’ Union adds to the growing body of evidence of the desperate need for more staff to take care of the residents of long-term care in Nova Scotia.
Residents and their families have made great sacrifices during the pandemic. We need to honour these efforts by seriously investing to improve the quality of life for long-term care residents, as we prepare for a second wave.
The NDP has legislation on the books to accomplish this by increasing staffing ratios to what the care of residents actually requires; all Premier McNeil needs to do is pass it.”

The NDP introduced the Care and Dignity Act in September 2018 in order to improve staff-to-resident ratios in long-term care. The NDP continues to call for a public inquiry into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on long-term care. Premier McNeil has refused to call such an inquiry.
