NDP table petition against street checks

HALIFAX - NDP spokesperson for African Nova Scotian Affairs Lisa Roberts made the following statement on a petition tabled today against street checks:

“Today’s petition comes from the community and again calls on Premier McNeil and his government to end the practice of street checks in Nova Scotia.

Street checks disproportionately affect racialized groups and cause distrust between the police and communities.

The NDP has called for a moratorium on this practice while the Human Rights Commission conducts its study. We know it causes harm and we should direct police to stop these checks now.”

The petition was organized by Working While Black and had 475 signatures.
