Liberals to remove school boards, abandon local decision-making

Governemnt plans to implement Glaze report

HALIFAX – The Liberals are planning to implement all recommendations of the Glaze Report, including the elimination of local decision-making in education.

“Getting rid of elected representatives and dictating who can be in the teachers’ union is not a good way to address classroom issues raised by parents, students and teachers,” said Claudia Chender, NDP Education Spokesperson. “We need urgent investment in our classrooms and action to address inclusion.”

In 2015 the Liberals eliminated the nine local health authorities and created a single provincial body. The move to one health authority has been widely criticized as being an unaccountable, Halifax-centric organization that does not respect input from local communities.

“I don’t think anyone would say the centralization of the health authority has been successful at improving patient care, doing the same thing in education won’t improve classroom conditions,” said Chender.
