Lafarge tire burning scheme one step closer to reality

Company has filed application for industrial approval

HALIFAX –Government approval for Lafarge Canada is one step closer to reality. In a release today it was announced that the multinational corporation has filed its application for industrial approval to burn tires for fuel.

“This process has gone far enough; the government needs to step in and tell Lafarge that Nova Scotia does not want tire burning,” said Lenore Zann, NDP spokesperson for the Environment.

Residents near Lafarge have been fighting against tire burning for a decade. Earlier this fall, the NDP presented their petition to stop the Lafarge deal and introduced an amendment to the Environment Act that would ban tire burning.

“The Liberals' decision to allow tire burning takes us away from our goals when it comes to the environment and climate change,” said Zann. “The Lafarge deal should never have gotten this far; there is still time to change course and the Liberals should do so immediately.

Government staff have 60 days to make a decision on the application once they have reviewed it and confirm it is complete.
